The Challenge

During the fall semester of my senior year at Miami University, I was given the challenge to create a short form, easy to learn tabletop game based upon a historical topic. The game could not be more than a few pages, following a strict format that allowed ease of use for whoever wished to play it.

The Solution

M.A.D., or Mutually Assured Destruction, is a game based upon the Cold War in which two players go head to head to see which folds and launches their nuclear arsenal, ending the game. One takes the role of the Eagle, while the other is the Bear. The Eagle and the Bear, as opposing superpowers, can never live in existence with each other.

In this game, each player has to choose between provoking their enemies or staying vigilant for whatever the opposing side may throw at them. There are no options for diplomacy, there is no way to talk things out. The two forces could stay locked in this dance for all time, not ending until one crumbles under the pressure.

In M.A.D., there is no way to win the game, instead the game goes on continuously until someone loses, and lets loose their nuclear weapons. Why? Because that’s the whole meaning behind the game. As long as weapons of mass destruction exist, the only conclusion that can come is that of mutually assured destruction. Such power held in the hands of man will never lead to any true form of peace.
